Jakarta –
The air pollution that has occurred in Jakarta in the last few weeks has raised concerns among the public. Not only has an impact on health, air pollution can also increase the risk of infertility, Mother.
Studies published in Environment International 2014 showed that there is a relationship between declining fertility rates and air pollution. A 2017 study in the same journal also found that poor air quality can impact overall health, including reproductive function.
“Although the biggest contributing factor to infertility is the woman’s age, many studies have shown that exposure to high levels of pollution every day is also associated with a decrease in fertility potential,” said Dr Ratna Saxena, IVF Specialist at Bijwasan, Nova Southend IVF and Fertility, reported Indian Express.
Saxena also adds that deteriorating air quality has been linked to a lower sex drive. As a result, many couples who want to program to get pregnant lose interest in having sex.
The same thing was conveyed by Senior Consultant and Reproductive Medicine Expert at Milann Fertility Hospital, Dr. Shilpa Ellur. According to him, air pollution can damage fertility to cause problems during pregnancy.
“In many studies, air pollution has been linked to infertility, difficult births, increased birth defects and stillbirths,” he said.
Air pollution and male fertility
Not only in women, air pollution can also interfere with male fertility, Mother. Experts say that air pollution can impact sperm quality.
“According to research conducted by Hammoud et al, exposure to PM2.5 (particles in air pollution) is negatively related to sperm morphology and motility,” said Saxena.
Meanwhile, according to Ellur, infertility can occur because contaminants in the environment (air pollution) release reactive oxygen species. In the end, this condition causes sperm quality to be disrupted.
“Reactive oxygen species can cause sperm to experience oxidative stress and lead to DNA fragmentation (splitting of DNA in the sperm head). In turn, this can lead to infertility problems,” says Ellur.
Then how can air pollution cause fertility problems in women to increase the risk of infertility?
