This kind of power at 12V is approximately 233A. You know what else uses 233A? My car when I’m on a fast charger. My car is an 800V car, but if it charges with ~190kW (not surprising if you have to visit a fastned once a month because you really drive an absurd amount of time in a day), then it is also towards 233A.
And what determines the necessary thickness of a power cable? Mainly the amount of ampere you drive through it. And have you ever seen that cable attached to a 300kW fastned charger? As they say in France: “Thicc boi”.
My problem with this power supply is not even 2800W. Provided the technology is efficient, I have no problem with something using 2800W, because it’s about performance/watt of course, and if you use a lot of watts, you can in theory have a lot of performance. And there are plenty of scenarios where this can be useful > PROVIDED it is efficient. If we look at the newer 350W CPUs from AMD, they are absurdly efficient per CPU, and the PPW is higher than even the much-vaunted Apple M-series piece of CPU genius, so if necessary, again, no problems with 2800W.
But there are problems with 2800W in one unit at 12V. I understand that this thing can really handle a spaghetti of cables, with a maximum of something like 150W per connector (Molex, on which every pin including PCIe HPWR is still specified, which is pretty neat per pin), but then again… there are places where the actual level of the CCS cable is located. And they are liquid cooled for a reason.
I make this rant more often, but I still maintain: it is time for PCs to choose a different voltage for their internal distribution (because that is what this is, distribution, there is really no hardware except fans that actually works on 12V). then 12V.
