This Friday evening, you will find one last time on RTS1 all the characters from the documentary series “Jeunesses!” And they are all united in the great bosom of Chavornay which was one of the highlights of 2022 for the Jeunesses vaudoises.
Widely followed, the series brought a certain celebrity to everyone. “Even when I go to my chalet in Valais, people recognize me there” says Robin, who became president of the Youth of Grandvaux. “During my classes at the vocational school, I had teachers who looked at me strangely, then realized that they had seen me in the series.”
For everyone, it’s the same thing. Whether they are the residents of the EMS in which Joël works or the students in Irène’s class, in Corcelles-près-Payerne, everyone waits on Friday to see their local celebrity. At Les Moulins, almost everyone already knew Damien. But when at the beginning of the month, he went to the Cantonal Youth Shooting in Rances, “even the elders recognized me,” he tells us. Joël, Irène and obviously Lucie, the president of the Fédé also went to Rances and everyone noticed: the RTS show was on everyone’s lips.
All the Youth are talking about it
“I am reassured, it was very well received among the Youth,” recognizes Lucie. People talk to me about it every day too, and not just within the framework of the Fed. I had a coordination session as part of my job as an architect and I could see that my interlocutors were looking at me intently. It took them a long time to realize that they had seen me in “Jeunesses!” And I won’t explain it to you, my mother runs a bistro and there all the customers talk to her about me.
Irene is all the more relieved that she had to be convinced to participate in the show. “The Youth’s previous experiences with the media were often not good, they only reinforced existing clichés. I told myself it was going to be the same thing again, but no, the team was able to show what we were going through. I don’t know if this will encourage young people to join us, but with this series, they at least have a good idea of what awaits them.
It’s also not easy to show a little of one’s privacy to such a large audience. Joël, who exposes his homosexuality for everyone to see, has only received encouraging messages. “There was even a former member of another Youth who explained to me that he, in his time, had never dared to come out to the Youth and that he was happy that I was able to do so. “.
“I watched them with my grandmother”
The protagonists saw the four episodes, the first two broadcast in public during special screenings, then the following ones on RTSPlay. “As soon as they were available, I watched them with my grandmother,” Joël tells us. Irène, who saw the episodes with her boyfriend, cannot watch them when they are broadcast live, “because every Friday evening in September, we have a Youth demonstration”. “I watched them with my cousin,” said Robin, “there were things that I had forgotten in the last episodes. And for the fourth this Friday, I’m thinking of going to see him again at the Youth office with the other members.
There is only one who still hasn’t seen episodes 3 and 4, and that’s Lucie. “It’s a shame, but I’m so busy as president of the Federation. I’m still going to try to catch up with the third and see the last one live, accompanied I hope. When the first episodes were shown in a cinema, I was happy to be surrounded, to feel the atmosphere of the audience, the laughter, to see what situation was causing people to talk. We didn’t go into this film to please the audience. We wanted to show what we did, how much we invested in our companies. Everyone can think what they want.”
Remembering your youth years
“I think we will continue to watch this film in the years to come,” smiles Irène. And in 20 or 30 years, he will still be there, we will obviously be among the Elders, but we will always remember our youth years.
“Yes, we will definitely watch it again in a few years,” Robin adds. And sitting on a bench, while drinking an aperitif, we will perhaps say to ourselves: what idiots we were when we were young!”
