Many believe they know what theater is: others, more humble, prefer not to give definitive answers, they say it is better to experience it. The actor and director Jorge Báez provides an answer to this question with his one-man story Historia de un boar or Algo de Ricardo, a work that says goodbye in The Other Theater (Tacuary 1046).
In an hour and minutes of powerful immersion, Báez leads to the heart of an original, atavistic theater, in a work that is at times anthropological. This is the reason why, in my opinion, Shakespeare and his Richard III beat in the background, they are more than an excuse, it is the experience of theater, the content and the form that overwhelm us.
The viewer’s bookshelf will move because this character is determined to do so. If he goes to see him, it is because he feels something about the boards and Jorge will break them over his head and take away all the conventions to which he became poorly accustomed in the different rooms of Asunción.
Few will be chosen, this work does not want crowds, it admits a select group that will surround the celebrant like a flock, who in moments will be a viperine high priest, who will look at him and who will not be able to hold his gaze because it is not convenient for him, who He will play Richard and other Shakespearean characters to see who can slap him best.
It will be a display in which Paraguayan theater is pointed with a sharp finger; actors, directors, producers and the public do not come out unscathed (I wonder: could it be because it does not name names that this work was not described as scandalous).
I return, theater is art, and although analytically we do not know very well how to define them, the best remedy for these intellectual limitations is to live the experience.
And what will happen today and tomorrow in The Other Theater, what an experience!
Surely it is one of the few moments in which art happens on stage (there is a lot of show, entertainment, technical and visual expertise, but not art), and for that only the minimum is needed, an audience, a venue and the actor, only one, and that one, let’s be grateful, is called Jorge Báez.
