The fire in Attica is yet another great disaster for the Northeast region of the basin. The first account shows its size. Thousands of acres of land were burnt, properties were lost in the fiery blaze and one woman lost her life.
The fire started at noon on Sunday from the area of Varnavas and until Tuesday morning there are active outbreaks in many areas. Nea and Palaia Penteli, Patima Halandiou and Patima Vrilissio, Marathon, Grammatikos are some of the areas that were engulfed in flames.
Residents and firefighters tried with all their might to limit the damage and save what they could. In several cases they succeeded, in others the power of fiery tongues was greater than human efforts.
Sadness and anger are evoked by the images of people who did everything in vain to save their possessions, the labors of a lifetime, some with tires in hand and others making constant appeals for help to the television cameras.
A school, a closed gym and several businesses were burned to the ground. The Penteli Observatory, the Penteli Children’s Hospital and the “Amalia Fleming” Hospital were threatened by the flames.
The battle with the fire was uneven and there were many fronts. The first report is a lot of land, houses, cars, but also animals turned into ashes. The next day’s pictures show what was left.
