The image of a woman in the works of 20 famous artists: an exhibition in the “Daugava” gallery
The new exhibition in the “Daugava” gallery confirms very vividly that the image of a woman in art is inexhaustible and always stimulating.
In total, the exhibition presents 30 works by 20 artists, from the 1930s to the present day.
Otto Skulme is represented by drawings of nudes, they are so light and ethereal that he seems to have just brushed the paper with blood and charcoal and outlined the contours of a woman’s body.
Alongside her works, there is a painting of her daughter Gemma Skulme’s “Motivo de Velasquez” in a completely different mood, with her characteristic female image – the Spanish Infanta – at the center of the painting.
Dace Great’s works are rich in color, full of special depth and spaciousness. In the painting “Sphinx” you can feel the Egyptian impressions of him, in the center there are oriental figures with the head of a woman and the body of a leopard. But in the painting “Guests a Bird” Dace Liela plays with the motifs of the Renaissance painter Paolo Uccello, says the creator of the exhibition Anda Treija: “I think that Uccello is because the Renaissance enters art with perspective, with this depth, spatiality Because until then he worked on the plane and it was a great discovery, a prospect.
And in the painting by Dace Liela you can see the motifs of Uccello’s work: the knights, a flying angel, with in the foreground a beauty on a horse created by the author, who seems to have stopped Uccello as a guest, that is, in his la painting. It is an image created by the artist’s imagination, by imagination. But there you can also see the materiality of those transparent socks, how that satin is folded “.
In the realization of the exhibition, Anda Treija’s gaze as an art historian was very important, also revealing the various influences and references that the works of the authors exhibited in the exhibition include.
One of them is the artist Tukuma Leonids Āriņš, whose passion was French painting, and this can also be seen in the act called “Guļava”.
Anda Treija says: “Here we see an art inspired by Matis, but of course Āriņš has already called it” Guļava “in his lexicon. In the background you can see a very characteristic motif: the window of his workshop.
I usually think so: well, he really loves Bonar, Matisse, but those French have such lightness, while Āriņas’s painting has the weight of a Latvian peasant. “
The influence of 18th and 19th century painting is felt in the paintings of Maija Tabaka, it is represented in the exhibition with the painting “Fragile Foundation”. Anda Treija continues: “It is sad that today young people no longer recognize what a model is. She is the excellent actress Antra Liedskalninina. Maija Tabaka said that Antra Liedskalninina was a great model who fascinated with her gesture and movement. Already in that painting, she also because she flies, because she jumps, and the white depth of the forest in the background is also beautiful. It is amazing how Maija Tabaka shapes the shape with color, how the light appears in her painting. The craftsmanship is excellent. . “
One of the topics covered in the exhibition is also the woman as a model and the artist’s work with the model.
Once upon a time there was Laimdot Mūrnieka’s studio in Riga, paid for by the Union of Artists and where many artists had the opportunity to work with models, the excellent nude painters Felicita Paulukas and Biruta Baumane actively visited the studio. Anda Treija says: “She and Felicita Pauliuk both competed in Mūrnieka’s workshop. As Biruta Baumane already considered herself the best still life painter, she said that her essence, her experiences, her attitude towards the world and of course , the sufferings of love and suffering can be shown directly through the act in his painting “.
At the exhibition it will also be possible to appreciate the works of both artists – Birutas Baumanes and Felicitas Paulūkas, and perhaps see some impressions of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
A witty interpretation of Rubens’ painting can be read in Franceska Kirke’s painting “Three Figures with Masks”, while in Normund Brasliņš’s small golden work “Girl with an Earring”, a certain closeness to icon painting can be felt. .
The exhibition “Woman – model, image. Woman – content and form ”has just begun her journey towards the public in the“ Daugava ”gallery and will be open to visitors until the end of November.
