The illegal cemetery is under water again

After the extreme weather in Europe, severe storm damage was also reported in our country in the past few days, and flash floods raged in some settlements. At the same time, due to the heavy rains of the past few days, a significant amount of precipitation also fell in the catchment areas of the Danube. As a result, a tidal wave will cross the Danube in the coming days.

According to the report of the National Water Warning Service, on Monday morning at Dunaújváros, the gauge showed 150 centimeters. In the following days, the water level of the river rose continuously. The water experts predicted the peak in our region for Wednesday. The forecasts indicated a water level of around 320 centimeters at Adony, 300 centimeters at Dunaújváros, and 210 centimeters at Dunaföldvár on August 9. In any case, the lower graves, close to the water, were certainly reached by the water on Wednesday.

Regarding the topic, we contacted the area’s maintainer and operator, the Central Danube Valley Water Administration. In their statement, they explained that the situation on the banks of the Danube in Dunaújváros was caused by the funeral organizations and the relatives: during the funeral, they did not comply with the regulations that stipulate the prohibition of leaving funeral supplies outside. As they write: “According to our board of directors, as the trustee of the nagyvíz river bed, the posted memorials do not constitute an obstacle preventing the flow of water, so for this reason, as well as for financial and charitable reasons, it cannot and does not want to carry out any meaningful intervention on the existing conditions.” We were also informed that there is no lease agreement with the directorate for the construction of the memorial site, and that no maintenance activities are carried out in relation to the memorial sites.
