The general director of Forest Management and Planning, José Luis Chan, the president of the Ourensano Institute for Economic Development (Inorde), Rosendo Fernández, and the mayor of Riós, Eva Barrio, participated in the opening speech.
In these interventions, the importance of recovering land without production was stressed, highlighting the Strategic Program for Chestnut and Chestnut Production in Galicia, which plans to recover 8,000 hectares of forests and plant 16,000 more that will be used for wood production. and fruit of this species, framed in the Forest Plan 2021-2040 “Towards carbon neutrality”. It should be noted that in Galicia there are nearly 50,000 hectares of chestnut trees and the groves cover an area of 27,000 hectares. Its presence is mostly in the interior and in the mountains of Ourense and Lugo, with a production of about 20 million kilos. In addition, these products are covered by the Chestnut of Galicia Protected Geographical Indication, guaranteeing a quality seal.
Another of the topics discussed was the future order that will establish model statutes for joint management forestry groups and the model models to establish use and exploitation rights in Galicia. He highlighted that this standard seeks to promote the creation of this type of entities that aim to protect the environment, prevent fires and promote rural development. In this sense, Inorde and the Department of Rural Affairs have also just signed an agreement to carry out a specific program for the identification, restoration and promotion of active and sustainable forest management.
Furthermore, on this opening day, two representatives of the Xunta offered two talks for attendees. The head of the Health and Vitality service of the Monte, José Martel, spoke about the pests and diseases suffered by chestnut trees in Galicia and how the Xunta is acting to manage them. On the other hand, Raquel Blanco, from the Sotos Areas of the Department of Rural Affairs, addressed the benefits of joint management groups as a tool for the recovery of copses. To this she added the pilot plan that is being developed in Galicia.
The Riós Chestnut Forum will end tomorrow with a final day in which a technical visit will be made to the Bierzo region, in León.
