Russia’s position as a major supplier of energy has suffered a permanent setback after the West turned its back on them, according to IEA chief Faith Birol.
– Russia has lost the energy battle, says the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in an interview with the French newspaper Libération on Saturday.
Birol notes that Russia’s oil and gas exports have fallen by 40 percent since it invaded Ukraine a year ago, and Western countries began looking for other supplier countries.
According to Birol, it is nevertheless only one of the problems of the Russian energy sector. Their oil and gas fields are so technically and geologically complex that they need the support of international experts.
– However, these have withdrawn from Russia, says Birol, who believes that energy production will therefore decline in the medium term.
