The series “The Idol”, starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd caused a stir after the presentation of its first two episodes at the Cannes Film Festival, critics consider it somewhere between “a Pornhub odyssey” and “a sordid masculine fantasy” .
Between scenes of graphic sex, gratuitous nudity, and several delays and controversies behind the scenes, the series “The Idol” was finally presented, created by Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and Sam Levinson (Euphoria). In this Lily-Rose Depp plays a rising pop star who begins a disturbing relationship with Tedros, a Los Angeles nightclub owner who is himself the leader of a modern cult.
Since its production and filming, this series has had multiple controversies, from the project abandoned by several creators due to creative differences, to the increase in sexual content and nudity, it has given a lot to talk about. It has even been described as “like a toxic man’s rape fantasy” and “sexual torture porn”.
How did it go with the Cannes review?

I love that this helps launch the rebranding of HBO Max, it should be a great fit alongside House Hunters!”
Lily-Rose Depp, for her part, came out in defense of the project, declaring that Levinson is the best director she has ever worked with, and said that she had never felt more supported or respected in a creative space; “My contributions and opinions have been highly valued,” she commented.
Given this, the series has also had positive reviews such as that of Damon Wise who highlighted the interpretive work of Lily-Rose Deep as fascinating, with a softly interpreted, “very sexualized”, but also down-to-earth and often vulnerable, disconcertingly addressing the fine lines between porn and art, power and exploitation that young women in the music industry have faced for years.
Despite the tone of the criticism published by experts and specialists, the public in the theater in Cannes had a very positive response. He began to applaud the new Tesfaye song that played over the end credits, and the applause died down after five minutes of standing ovation.
