The iconic timeless ‘peppery’ Fiat celebrates 35 years

The Fiat Uno Turbo blows out 35 candles: presented for the first time in 1985, in the middle of a golden decade for hot hatches, the ‘peppery’ version of the small car of the Turin company has written indelible pages in the history of Italian and international motoring, making dream of entire generations.

Fiat launched the legendary Fiat Uno Turbo two years after its arrival on the market One, unveiled in style on the Cape Canaveral launch pad in 1983. The two small cars of the Lingotto, closely derived, both had front-wheel drive. What made the Turbo version different and unique was its more dynamic and sporty look: offered only with the three-door body, it had diamond-effect alloy wheels, a lowered trim and the front “fascia” with additional air intakes . In the rear, however, there were the chromed exhaust and the roof spoiler.

The Fiat, which has recently presented the new Crossover version of the Tipo, also made changes to the interior of the Uno: the Turbo version was distinguished from the basic version by the black seat belts, the red and black carpet and the sports steering wheel with the legendary writing “Uno Turbo ie.”.

The little Turin was a real “splinter”: thanks to its weight of only 854 kg and the 105 horsepower 1.3 turbo petrol engine, the Uno Turbo was able to reach 200 km / h top speed. Very respectable numbers also in terms of acceleration: from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.0 seconds.

After a stylistic update arrived two years after launch, which included innovations regarding the grille, the rear-view mirrors, the dashboard and the digital speedometer, in 1989 the second generation of the Uno Turbo. This differed from the first in a thinner grille, slimmer headlights and sculpted hood, as well as a more harmonious and angular body.

The novelties of the second generation also concerned the weight, which reached 940 kg, and the 112 horsepower 1.4-liter engine that allowed the car to go up to 205 km / h. In 1992 the special version was launched Racing of the Uno Turbo which featured the sunroof, standard electric windows and external logos with the word “Racing”.

Remained in production until 1994, the Uno Turbo passed the baton to GT point. For years, fans have been hoping for a return of the Uno: waiting to understand if the legendary subcompact of the 80s will be revived in a new guise and will be part of the future projects of theFCA-PSA alliance that gave birth to Stellantis, the Uno Turbo still remains one of the most sought-after cars on the second-hand market today, with some restored examples that can cost up to 15,000 euros.
