Four examples of stones posted on the Facebook group in the past few weeks. The motifs can still be seen.

During the first lockdown in spring 2020, the hype was great: almost every day, several posts were posted in the Facebook group “Kaarster Steine”. On the one hand, when the group members have found painted stones that have been laid out in the urban area, on the other hand, when the “artists” have painted new stones with pictures or even just colors. Little by little the stones became more and more professional, the members really hung in and posted small works of art. But if you look at the group today, you have to see that the interest has decreased a lot. In the past few months, the sentence: “Finally found something again” has been posted frequently and by various members. Only rarely are experiences of success posted in the form of stone finds. If so, in the end it was always the same sites: Vorster Wald or Saturnstrasse in Kaarst. But why has interest in the group or the stone painting decreased?

Susanne Röttgen founded the group in January 2020, so the “Kaarster Steine” will soon be celebrating their second “birthday”. About six months ago, however, Röttgen moved to Witten and could no longer really take care of the group. “It has become a little quieter,” explains Röttgen when our editorial team asked. But: Every now and then new stones are still posted. Especially in the Advent season, the number of painted stones that were shown on the page went up again. “There are hard-working stone painters who keep the group alive with their great stones,” continues Susanne Röttgen.
