The husband of the former Princess Mako can finally become a lawyer in New York

In the month of July, Kei Komuro, the husband of the former Japanese princess Mako Komuro, passed the New York State Bar Exam for the third time. Today, second organization website, Komuro passed the exam and can now become a licensed attorney in New York. Kei, a law graduate from Fordham in 2021, called the bar last July, three months before he and Mako were civilly married in Tokyo. In November 2021, the couple moved to New York, where Kei found a job as a legal assistant at a law firm. In February 2022, he ran for the bar again, without success. From him, Mako would have gotten an internship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his writings on Japanese art have even been published on their website. Only one thing stood in the way of their dream: Kei had to pass the bar to become a full-fledged lawyer in town.

A controversial relationship

The relationship between Mako and Kei, which began when the couple was a student at Tokyo’s International Christian University more than a decade ago, has been criticized by Japanese tabloids because of Komuro’s humble origins and reports of the family’s financial difficulties. Although the couple first announced their engagement in 2017, they postponed the marriage for more than three years. When they finally got married last October, a handful of people gathered in a park to protest the union.

Mako, daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and grandson ofthe emperor Naruhito, she turned down the $ 1.3 million payment usually given to women when they leave their families, and the tabloids speculated about their financial future.

A senior Imperial Household Agency official reportedly expressed relief at passing the bar exam when Kei was contacted by the Japanese newspaper. Mainichi : “It is reassuring to see the foundation for the future [du couple] I’m finally okay ”.
