Hurricane winds and heavy downpours have caused a lot of damage to Smolyansko in the past 24 hours. A strong wind with a thunderstorm broke the trees like sticks, eyewitnesses who happened to be in the Pamporovo resort said.
Three cars were crushed by huge fir trees that fell on them in the parking lot in front of the Camellia Hotel in Pamporovo. “There was a party inside and people were constantly hanging out in the parking lot, the tree fell around 3am when people were leaving the party and driving into the parking lot,” eyewitnesses said. The destroyed cars belong to people and companies from Harmanli, Plovdiv and Burgas.
The strong wind broke many trees in many other places in the resort. By late afternoon, fallen trees and stones were being cleared in many places on roads throughout the district, the Regional Road Administration duty officer said. There are many broken and fallen trees in the area of Pamporovo, Prevala Pass and Smolyanski Lakes, as well as in Banite, Momchilovtsi.
Everywhere, road maintenance companies are clearing and the roads are passable, the duty officer said. Work is continuing to clear a landslide of boulders on the road before the mining village of Elkhovets where one lane is closed. Miraculously no one was hurt.
