The Angoulême International Comics Festival awarded its Fauve d’Or for best album this Friday to The hunting accident by the Americans Landis Blair and David Carlson, a long graphic novel on Chicago from the last century.

The winners were revealed this Friday during a ceremony without an audience at the Angoulême theater, while the most prestigious award of the Festival, the Grand Prix which rewards the career of a comic book author, will await the grand edition. Festival audience scheduled for late June.

Redemption

The hunting accident is a distressing black and white account, over 450 pages long, about the journey of a man who goes blind, not during a hunting accident as the title suggests, but from a robbery in the Chicago Prohibition. Through the eyes of his son, the album tells the story of the redemption of a delinquent who learns to survive in prison despite his handicap, then to appreciate the beauty of the world.

The authors thanked the jury with a video broadcast at the theater, saying they were “honored to receive a prize from the heart of the literary world in the West”. The special jury prize was awarded to Briton Steven Appleby for “Dragman”, a super-heroine behind which hides a father.

Among the other prizes, the high school students’ prize awarded Hubert and Zanzim’s “Peau d’homme”, already crowned with multiple other comic book awards, while the revelation prize went to Maurane Mazars for “Tanz! “. The general public edition at the end of June is threatened with a boycott of the authors, dissatisfied with the low remuneration of the authors and the inertia of the public authorities to give them an adapted tax status. “If things don’t change I won’t be there in June. I will be in solidarity with the other authors, because there are really tired of them, ”said Zanzim when receiving his award.
