The boat sails just a few miles from Manhattan Harbor. And yet, humpback whales throw themselves above the water. A broom without interruption during two hours of navigation, in front of tourists and inhabitants dumbfounded and amazed. A spectacle all the more exciting as it is a real sign of hope in the midst of a climate crisis.
Humpback whales are returning as New York Bay recedes. The president of an environmental protection association was able to make his own observation. “During the first trips to sea in 2011, we saw five whales during the summer. This year, we are at 270. This increase is incredible.” Decontamination is not new. By the early 1970s, the Hudson and East Rivers, which surround Manhattan, were completely polluted, repelling most of the marine life. The city of New York took, from 1972, measures of protection and remediation.
