Yesterday in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation and partnership with the Human Rights Department of the League of Arab States, the Permanent Committee for Human Rights in the UAE held a high-level regional event entitled “The Impact of Climate Change on the Enjoyment of Human Rights and Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.”
His Excellency Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, indicated in the statement he delivered during the opening of the event that the organization of the event comes at a very important time, a few days before the start of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held on November 30. -December 12 at Expo City Dubai.
His Excellency added: “The UAE is preparing to receive delegations and thousands of visitors who are keen to develop a unified vision for implementing climate commitments and pledges, and to work together to take concrete measures, find solutions that contribute to overcoming challenges, and seize opportunities to ensure a sustainable future for current and future generations.”
His Excellency stressed that the UAE, with the support of its wise leadership, is strengthening its effective role in the field of climate action at the national and global levels, and is keen to achieve the goals of the “Emirates Climate Neutrality Strategy,” which represents an integrated plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The opening session witnessed interventions by His Excellency Ambassador Talal Khaled Al-Mutairi, Chairman of the Arab Permanent Committee for Human Rights, His Excellency Ambassador Mounir Al-Fassi, Director of the Human Rights Department of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, His Excellency Muhammad Ali Al-Shehhi, Member of the Arab Charter Committee on Human Rights, and His Excellency Dina Assaf, Resident Representative of the United Nations, and Her Excellency Jinan Al-Sharif, President of the Arab Parliament for Children.
The event also witnessed the holding of an interactive dialogue session that focused on reviewing the efforts made at all national, regional and international levels to mitigate the impact of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights and the achievement of sustainable development goals.
The organization of the high-level regional event comes within the results of the work of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights in the League of Arab States, and within the framework of celebrating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
It is worth noting that the Permanent Committee for Human Rights, which was established by the Council of Ministers in October 2019 and headed by His Excellency Dr. Anwar Muhammad Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to His Highness the President of the State, is considered a coordination mechanism between agencies and institutions concerned with human rights in the UAE and, among its tasks, it supervises the promotion of… Cooperation with regional organizations and United Nations bodies and mechanisms in the field of human rights.
As part of its national human rights agenda, the Permanent Committee organizes conferences, events and workshops at the national level and within cooperation and partnerships with regional and international organizations specialized in the field of human rights.
