The Human Forever exhibition in Deurne was opened by 100-year-old Tiny Remmen-De Martines

The exhibition Human Forever can only be seen from Monday in the Community House, but it had a smaller preview on Saturday morning in the Deurne Cultural Center at the De Nacht van het Witte Doek Film Festival. The pictures made by members of the Optika photo club show people who live in a care home in the town of Deurne because of their depression. The 100-year-old Mrs. Tiny Remmen-De Martines from Deurne was allowed to open the exhibition together with director Danielle Deckers-Niessen from the Zorgboog.

For the centenary, there was no problem in giving the starting signal, despite its age. “Oh, that was very simple,” said Remmen-De Martines. “These are 35 beautiful pictures of people from seven residential facilities and I had to say they were on display.”

Teun Toebes
For the temporary exhibition, the series of paintings were shown hanging from steel wire in a smaller portrait format than in the last exhibition in the Community House. Framed copies will be hung there and will be on view until the end of September. After the opening of the exhibition, the film Human Forever was shown in the main hall, which emphasizes the different ways in which people with dementia are treated in different countries.

“That is a film by Teun Toebes, a young man who has completed training in health care and wants to advocate for a different way of dealing with people with depression,” says Deckers-Niessen.

A different way
“For example, the sheltered housing where he lived for a year and a half. He made a very nice friendship there and saw that there is more possible than what is happening now, because certain activities have stopped or, for example, some things are no longer allowed in terms of safety. It’s to encourage people to look at the quality of life of people with dementia in a different way,” explains Danielle Deckers-Niessen.

To draw attention to this locally, the exhibition and film screening were organized in Deurne. According to the director of Zorgboog, by looking at dementia in this different way, there are more opportunities to allow people to stay at home longer and to manage patients without professional help.

100-year-old Mrs. Remmen-De Martines also believes that the idea presented in the film is a good starting point for dealing with depression in a different way: “The name of the film says it all: Human Forever. That’s what I like about it.”
