Nasa is working to remedy a problem which has put the Hubble Telescope’s scientific activities on hold. The telescope’s scientific instruments will enter safe mode on October 25 after they discovered the lack of specific messages for data synchronization.
The Hubble team is now working to isolate the problem on the hardware. More specifically, they analyze the circuits on the control unit that generates the synchronization messages and send them to the instruments.
The team will also start looking at different ways to get around the problem. Among other things, by changing the instruments’ software that checks for the lost messages so that they register this without the instruments entering safe mode. These solutions will first be tested on simulators on the ground to ensure that they work as planned.
Nasa writes that the team proceeds cautiously to avoid putting unnecessary stress on any hardware. Otherwise, the rest of the Hubble Telescope works as expected.
