The HR manager of a hospital in Budapest stole half a billion forints with her husband and his associates, a yacht was also seized

Economic defense investigators in Budapest questioned more than fifty suspects in the case of a series of frauds involving two health institutions with a value exceeding half a billion forints. According to a statement from Budapest police headquarters, a yacht was also seized.

In May 2022, the director general of one of the Budapest hospitals filed a complaint about the unusual series of frauds. It turned out that in the previous year, one of the institution’s main human policy staff had registered twenty people who had never worked at the hospital as employees.

They wrote that over HUF 246 million in wages and other benefits were transferred to the real bank accounts of fake employees in 11 months. BRFK economic protection investigators also revealed that the 50-year-old woman registered fraudulent employees at her former workplace, another health care facility, with the help of a subordinate. There, he transferred nearly HUF 332 million to 51 people between 2016 and 2021, and created contracts and other documents for non-existent employees.

The opening of the bank accounts required for the transfers was handled by the husband of the senior HR woman and another through straw men. The accountants were aware that they were helping in a crime, and they received compensation several times for that. The investigators questioned a total of 49 people suspected of laundering money.

They said that the four organizers were suspected of the crime of fraud committed as part of a criminal conspiracy and as a business, using an information system. In addition, the HR woman’s husband is suspected of money laundering, herself of money laundering and using a false personal document. In addition to the fake documents, the police seized two cars, four million forints and a yacht. All suspects are allowed to defend themselves. The police closed the investigation, so the case is now with the prosecutor’s office.
