That’s what “The House that Jack Built” is about

The plot focuses on the twelve-year murderous career of the highly intelligent serial killer Jack (Matt Dillon), who operates in the USA in the 1970s and 1980s. As Jack commits his brutal murders, the audience witnesses his dark thoughts and obsessions. In between, Verge (Bruno Ganz), a mysterious companion who leads Jack to hell, takes part in the conversations. Jack talks about five murders that he committed over the course of his murderous career and philosophizes with Verge about the connection between art, architecture and murder.

That’s what makes “The House that Jack Built” so worth seeing

If you’re not a fan of Lars von Trier, you’d better stay away from the film. Similar to the two “Nymphomaniac” films, Lars von Trier combines two levels. On the one hand, the stories about Jack’s murders, in which the audience is spared nothing, from breasts cut off to children being shot, and on the other hand, the level in which Jack and Verge talk about things, off-screen and with images like architecture. This can be a bit awkward for many people. But if you can get involved, you can expect an intensive analysis of the psyche of a murderer, skillfully staged in the typical Lars von Trier style. In terms of acting, Matt Dillon delivers a fantastic performance and the film also has a fantastic cast in the supporting roles, including Uma Thurman and Riley Keough. But once again the warning: a film that doesn’t even shy away from the murder of children is not suitable for everyone.
