The term “energy poverty” has already established itself in the official vocabulary of the European Union. However, if you pay your bills correctly, but the radiators are barely hot, the children are constantly sick, and you yourself lose the ability to work due to the exacerbation of chronic diseases, you cannot be formally identified as “poor in energy”.
The war in Ukraine, the pandemic and climate change: these are the complaints of the European energy system. Consumers are unable to cope with the rapid rise in bills, despite the various support mechanisms offered by the countries. Even before the current energy crisis, one in ten Europeans could not heat their homes, while 100,000 people died after prolonged freezing in their homes. How big will “energy poverty” be in Europe this winter? Why don’t economists like the idea of subsidies popular with politicians? And in which cases can cold radiators become the cause of death?
