The “hot dRAT” has been around for almost two years – and for the second time the online magazine at the Ratsgymnasium scored points in the school newspaper competition of the cultural foundation of the Westphalian Provincial Insurance. A year ago there was already a special price for the newcomers. This year, the team around Senior Editor Philipp Schröder achieved second place. The jury particularly emphasized the good readability and clear structure of the magazine. “The school newspaper editors are becoming more and more multimedia and use many other channels for their journalistic work in addition to their online and print editions. We very much welcome this development, ”explains Thomas Tenkamp, Managing Director of the Cultural Foundation and member of the jury.
A school newspaper cannot be taken for granted. When Hendrik Snethkamp became head of the Ratsgymnasium in 2015, there was no longer any, as he says. The initiative came from a teacher: Working group leader Jennifer Bloch developed the idea with a former student two years ago, and she immediately found technical expertise in school circles to get the online magazine up and running: “Students can do that better than Teacher . . . ”
School and Corona, digitization, climate protection
There is a weekly conference to find a topic. It’s about things that are important for young people – not least about schools in times of Corona, about digitization and climate protection. The contributions are brought together from across the school and, if necessary, supplemented with explanatory videos. The “hot dRAT” also tackles the issue, asks about educational justice, conspiracy theories, facts about Corona – and also reports from the public.
In the months of distance learning, the page was not populated quite as often – but next Wednesday an editorial conference is to take place in the school again. It may also be about the successor to the editor-in-chief. Because he’s just graduating from high school.
