The Horse and the Tower: Marco Damilano’s Metaphorical Siege at Rai3

What metaphor to use for Marco Damilano? Every evening, on a Rai3 which is gradually losing its historical identity, he hosts “The Horse and the Tower” (the title itself turns to allegory: the chess tower is the symbol of those who make a repetitive move, while the horse jumps and displaces), the progressive option to Bruno Vespa’s “Five minutes” on Rai1. Before the metaphor, again the chessboard of the schedule: at this moment the daily appointment is located between “Via Dei Matti n° 0” and “Un posto al sole”. Some time ago I wrote that the strip is not homogeneous, but perhaps this positioning translates into a strong point. Damilano can count on Stefano Bollani’s fans and those of Palazzo Paladini. They are different audiences but, for various reasons, they have a meeting point in front of the horse on Viale Mazzini.

Before the metaphor, a bit of cultural background. Damilano was a student of Pietro Scoppola, one of the main exponents of democratic Catholicism, and graduated in Political Science with a thesis on Italian television and politics in the 1950s and 1960s (I read it and gave him complimented). He began his journalistic work as editor of “Segno 7”, the Catholic Action weekly and grew up in the shadow of the Sturzo Foundation. Finally, he moved to Espresso (not the current one), climbing all the positions, up to management. Communist Catholic? No, let’s say left-wing Catholic. So, Damilano is undergoing a double siege: within the network (just think of that flop “Avanti Popolo”) and within Rai: I hope that CEO Roberto Sergio protects him.

But here we were looking for the metaphor of the siege: there are those who maintain that the metaphor of the siege is consolatory (only against everyone!), there are those who maintain that it is a very effective rhetorical exercise (the victim always arouses sympathy) , there are those who argue that the siege is the symbol of resistance and resilience (I apologize for the word), the last shield against the now dominant ideology. For me, a convincing “explanatory” would be needed, perhaps on La7.
