Russia launches a “kamikaze” drone attack or crashes into the capital Ukraine, Kiev. The attack caused a series of explosions and resulted in the death toll.
Reported CNNOn Monday (10/17/2022), Ukrainian authorities said a “kamikaze” drone attack by the Russian army took place Monday morning in Kiev, local time. Three explosions were reportedly heard in Kiev.
Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak called the drone strike a sign of Russia’s desperation.

“Russia thinks it will help them, but these actions show desperation,” Yermak said.
He repeated calls on Western Allies to provide Ukraine with a more sophisticated missile defense system. According to him, assistance cannot be postponed.
“We need more air defenses as soon as possible. We don’t have time to procrastinate. We need more weapons to protect space and destroy the enemy,” Yermak said.
Russia has not yet responded to the Ukraine report. In a separate statement via Telegram, Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said a “drone strike” caused a “fire in a non-residential building” in his area.
“The firefighters are hard at work. Several residential buildings have been damaged. Doctors are on site,” he said.
Klitschko said one of the blasts took place in the Shevchenkivskyi district in central Kiev.
“All emergency services have been dispatched to the scene. The air raid sirens continue. Stay in your shelters!” she said via Telegram.

The Russian drone attack that hit several buildings near the railway station in central Kiev occurred during the morning rush hour. The incident resulted in fires and damage to several residential blocks in Kiev.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that several residential buildings were damaged in the Russian attack. The explosions shook the Shevchenkivskyi district just after 8:00 local time, when many people were leaving for work and children to go to school. A shock wave was also felt in Kiev about an hour earlier.
Reuters television footage showed a missile fired into the sky with the apartment buildings below in flames. Kiev authorities said “critical infrastructure” was attacked after a series of explosions were reported.
