The horror from Northern Macedonia reached Sofia! Here’s what’s happening

A strong smell of burns bothered the citizens of Sofia tonight.

If you can smell burns in Sofia as well, it is from the fires in the Republic of Northern Macedonia, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology announced.

Much of Southwestern Bulgaria is under this blanket of smoke. With a transfer from the southwest, which will gradually be oriented from the west, and will remain so in the coming hours.

In connection with signals submitted to the contact center of Sofia Municipality for the smell of smoke, they announced that at the moment there are no fires on agricultural and forest lands in Sofia. And they clarified that the strong wind is the reason for the smell of smoke coming from fires outside the municipality.

There is currently no fire on either Rila or Vitosha, sources in the fire department said. Earlier today, a fire raged in Plana Mountain, near Kalenderova Mahala.

The teams of the Emergency Directorate of the Sofia Municipality in coordination with the fire brigade carry out continuous monitoring.

As BLIC reported, earlier today they complained about a similar problem in Blagoevgrad. There was a smell of burns in places. And in the border villages, like Logodazh, ashes were also transferred.

A fire is raging in Plana Planina near Mahala Kalenderova, Stolitsa.bg reports. The fire covered part of the forest, but there are residential buildings nearby.

Teams from the Sofia Fire Brigade and the Emergency Aid and Prevention Directorate are on site to help firefighters battling the relentless flames. Strong wind further complicates the situation. Efforts to limit the flames and extinguish them have been going on for 3 hours now. At the moment there is no danger for people and residential buildings.

Near the hearth is the village of Zheleznitsa.

Meanwhile, the director of the Southwestern State Forest Enterprise, engineer Damyan Damyanov, informed that the fire, which has been raging for several days in the region of Pehchevo and Delchevo in the Republic of Northern Macedonia, continues to approach Bulgaria.

The front of the fire reached a distance of between 3 and 5 kilometers.

The necessary measures have been taken to prevent the passage of Bulgarian territory, he said.

“Tomorrow we are driving heavy equipment with the idea of making a lane to provide some security. From the morning there will be employees of the Southwestern company on duty to monitor the development of the fire.

Subsequently, perhaps from this fire and the four fires in the Kyustendil region, the whole gorge of Struma is like gassed – everywhere it smells of burns, it smells of smoke, which worries people, “he told BNR.
