The vaccine against COVID-19 from the American pharmaceutical Moderna is effective against newer variants. This is demonstrated by a study of in vitro neutralization conducted by the Sutter Health Health Systems Research Center of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute, in the United States.
The study, published in the bioRxiv platform, has tested the efficacy of Moderna’s vaccine against new variants. Among them, those of South Africa (beta variant), Uganda, Nigeria, Angola and India (Delta). The latter is the one that worries in Europe for their advance across the continent and their high contagion rate. The vaccine it works against all of them.
More effective than Pfizer
Researchers have also found that the Moderna generates more antibodies and faster than Pfizer / BioNTech. In any case, both work against the Delta variant.
After knowing the results, the general director of Moderna, Stéphane Bancel, has expressed that “these new data are encouraging and reinforce our confidence that Modern COVID-19 vaccine should continue to protect against new variants detected ”.
According to Bancel, the US pharmaceutical company has adopted a proactive strategy to anticipate possible future mutations. “As we try to defeat the pandemic, it is imperative that we be proactive as the virus evolves“, has explained.
