The Holy Synod approved the election of the Metropolitan of Sliven. There will be a new vote according to the old procedure. The decision was announced by Kyprian, the Metropolitan of Stara Zagorje.
“According to the Statute of the BOC, the counting of the held diocesan election for Sliven Metropolitan is final. He entrusts the Metropolitan of Varna to continue to manage the Diocese of Sliven and to hold new elections for the Metropolitan”, read grandfather Cyprian.
With this decision of the Synod, Metropolitan John is entrusted with a complete financial and property audit of the Sliven Diocese. Bishop John of Varna should also check the list of diocesan voters – whether they comply with the Statute of the BOC.
Regarding the contested amendment to elect diocesan leaders, today’s Synod ruling states that the February 24 ordinance to elect diocesan vicars is inapplicable at this point.
There was a protest and a counter-protest on the spot today. At one protest, there are people from the Sliven diocese, supported by believers from the Vidin, Dorostol and Lovchan dioceses. They want the Holy Synod to continue the election of the future Metropolitan of Sliven according to the rules that have been operating until now according to the Statute of the BOC.
On the other side, there are mainly priests from the Plovdiv Metropolis who support the synodal decision from the end of February, which stopped the election of a metropolitan. It is in the hands of the Synod to decide which of the two ways to proceed with the vote.
The reason for the dissatisfaction, to some extent, is the fact that of the two proposed names, that of Bishop Hierotheus stands out. Thus, the metropolitans are faced with an almost fait accompli.
