UPDATED 11:06 AM
Roglič will be recuperating from injuries sustained during Stage 5 after falling on the cobblestones and will no longer help his team-mate and overall leader Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark.
Roglič fell hard on the track known from the Paris-Roubaix classic, when he hit a haystack, which was probably pushed onto the road by a motorcycle. You dislocated your shoulder, but you put it back in the right position. He completed the remaining 30 kilometers of the stage, but lost more than two minutes to his rivals. Vingegaard became the leader of Jumbo-Vism, and Roglič moved to the role of his superdomestic.
He gradually lost more and more time when the team worked even in the demanding alpine stages. In the overall classification, he was in 21st place before his withdrawal, 33:39 minutes behind Vingegaard. He can continue to rely on the absolute leader of the points competition, Wout van Aert from Belgium.
“We have decided that I will not start on Sunday to allow my injuries to heal properly. I am proud of my contribution to the current position of our team and I believe that we will fulfill our ambitions to get the yellow and green jersey. Thank you all for the great support.” the 32-year-old Roglič was quoted by the portal cyclingnews.com.
The Slovenian did not finish the TdF for the second time in a row. Last year he crashed at the start of the race and eventually retired after the eighth stage. However, he recovered later in the season and won the time trial at the Tokyo Olympics and the Spanish Vuelta for the third time in a row. Jumbo-Visma is expected to lead again at the final Grand Tour of the season.
Peter Sagan is a phenomenon. The fans are still “eating” him:
