Carlos spoke about the history of vaccines for more than three quarters of an hour. It began with the first steps of vaccines, which date back to 1796, when the English doctor and scientist Edward Jenner, through the observation of cow milkers who had infections in their hands but not in their faces, and who never were dying of smallpox, he came up with the idea of treating the first child with the scabs they took from cows, to try to immunize him. That’s where the name “vaccine” comes from, derived from “cow.”
Then, step by step, he explained the different historical milestones that the history of the vaccine has experienced until reaching the current RNA vaccines.
He paused a little longer in his dissertation when he came to the topic of tuberculosis vaccines. He added that the vaccine against this disease, which his team has been researching and developing, is in phase three (effectiveness) with clinical trials in South Africa, Madagascar and Senegal.
The room where the presentation was held was filled to capacity and the audience followed Carlos’s dissertation with interest and actively participated by asking the speaker questions about different medical issues, to which he gladly responded.
Some people may be surprised that one of the leading national figures on vaccine issues has agreed to give a talk in a small town in the province of Zamora. It is worth mentioning that Carlos Martín has repeatedly visited Villaferrueña, since a resident of the town, Santiago Martínez, was his schoolmate in his childhood. In this way, when the Abuyaco Association presented the possibility of organizing a talk on vaccines, he gladly and selflessly offered to share his knowledge about the history of vaccines.
At the end of the event, the Association offered Carlos a basket with local products as a thank you for his collaboration.
