Last year it was broadcast only four times

What name should I give my son? Tristan may be the perfect choice here, although unfortunately his importance is not optimistic. In Poland, it is one of the least frequently given male names – only 676 men have it. Moreover, last year only four newborn boys were given this rare name. Why is this beautiful-sounding name so rarely chosen?

The name Tristan became famous thanks to the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde, telling the story of the tragic, unrequited love of a knight and an Irish princess. But it is this story that brings dark associations with the name Tristan. In addition, for years it was incorrectly pointed out that it comes from the Latin word “tristis”, meaning “sad, gloomy, unhappy”. In fact, it most likely comes from the Celtic name Drustan, meaning “uproar, uproar, unrest, agitation.” Meanwhile, under the influence of the French “triste” (Polish: “sad”), it was transformed into the name Tristan. Loosely translated, it means a boy “born for sadness”.

“The literary connotations are obvious and very positive”

This unusual meaning of the name Tristan raises many doubts among future parents. One of the mothers decided to ask experts for advice. “I am a future mother who is considering the name of her child. I would like to ask for your opinion on the name Tristan,” she asked the Polish Language Council.

RJP expert, Dr. Katarzyna Kłosińska, replied: “I express the opinion that the name Tristan does not violate the rules that should be followed when choosing a name for a boy. It is not a diminutive, an indecent name, it clearly indicates the child’s gender, and its literary connotations are obvious and very positive,” she explained.
