The history of the balaklava: from the balaclava to the hat

Balaclavas are the trend of the winter, but the demonstrators in Lützerath are also wearing them. Finally, the wool hats, which enclose the whole head, protect against wind and cold – and against prying eyes.

In recent winters, a fashion accessory that has its roots in the military has made a name for itself: the balaclava hat. It’s actually a classic balaclava. The wool hat encloses the neck and the whole head and only leaves out the area around the eyes, sometimes also the mouth. They are available in all sorts of bright colors. If you’re unlucky, it can make you look like a bank robber or the character in Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream. Or like the Teletubbies.
