The subject of the week: The History of Julius Caesar
History of Julius Caesar is the monumental work desired by Napoleon III on this historical figure whom he venerates above all others. The emperor’s passion was such that he himself took charge of writing the first two volumes, published respectively in 1865 and 1866. The third volume, published at the end of the 1860s, was written by Eugène Stoffel.
This History of Julius Caesar is accompanied by an atlas of thirty-six plates (some of which are in color) representing the main sites mentioned in the text. It is this atlas which is the subject of our photo.
A History of Julius Caesar in good condition can easily fetch several hundred euros. A single atlas was sold for €180 on a site specializing in old books.
