The History of Ice Cream: From Ancient Delicacy to Modern Mass Consumer Product

Historians have found out that the history of ice cream and similar delicacies goes back more than 2500 years – the first news about such treats are mentioned in Persian chronicles, writes All About History. For centuries, ice cream was an expensive delicacy that only members of the highest and wealthiest layers of society could afford to enjoy.

However, starting from the 19th century, this delicacy became a mass consumer product, and thanks to street vendors, it was possible to buy it literally on every street corner in the world’s largest cities. One such merchant was Italo Marchioni, who had emigrated to the United States in 1895, settled in Hoboken, New Jersey, and traveled daily in his cart to Manhattan, where his ice cream was in high demand.

Marchionni experimented not only with ice cream flavors. His goal was to create a product that would be as convenient as possible for both the seller and the customer, and the solution was simple: fill ice cream in containers made of wafers.
