Queen Margrethe of Denmark has a wide variety of jewels in her collection. The diamond has a special history. Read here why this is.
The daisy-shaped jewel (related to the daisy) has a rich history that begins with Queen Margrethe’s grandmother, Swedish Crown Princess Margareta (1882- 1920).

Margareta became a princess
Margaret Victoria Charlotte Augusta Norah, originally British-Prussian, married the Swedish Prince Gustavus Adolphus (1882-1973) in 1905. As a result, from then on she was known in Sweden as Princess Margareta. In 1907, King Gustavus Adolphus V of Sweden died, leaving Margareta and Gustavus Adolphus as the new Crown Princess and Prince of Sweden.

Memories of Margareta
Crown Princess Margareta died young at the age of 38 in 1920. Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus decided to put together a brooch in memory of his wife from diamonds in Margareta’s possession. He gave this badge as a gift to his daughter, Princess Ingrid (1910-2000), when she married the Danish Crown Prince Frederik (1899-1972) in 1935. A few years later, in 1940, Princess Margrethe, now known as Queen Margrethe, was born.

Something borrowed
When the Crown Princess at the time, Margrethe tied the knot with him Henrik In 1967 she borrowed the badge from her mother, Queen Ingrid’s Coalition. She will pin the brooch on her wedding dress.

A precious gift
Queen Margrethe then receives the badge on her 60th birthday from her mother, who will then be 90 years old. Soon after, the queen’s former companion died. We often see Queen Margrethe appearing with the jewel on special occasions.

Daisy
We ask jewelery historian Martijn Akkerman about Queen Margrethe’s precious jewel. “Emotion is very important to Queen Margrethe, also when we express that emotion through jewellery. If we look at naming who gave up, then she put on a gem in the shape of a daisy. A symbol for her name, Margrethe, but also a symbol for her pet name, Daisy“, Martijn said.
