Place Au-Bois in Thionville would be a creation of Cormontaigne, intended to improve the passages between different points of the bastioned fortifications, indicates the heritage service of the city. A block of houses was destroyed, on the orders of the military engineer, around 1747.
A wood market took place within this space which had become liberated. Hence the name of the place. On the other hand, it is difficult to know who came there to sell their wood, where they came from, and what their primary destination was.
Presumably, this wood was intended to fuel the stoves, for heating and cooking.
Over time, the place changed its name several times: it was called Place des Fours-Banaux in 1776, Place de la Liberté in 1794 and Place Au-Bois on the cadastre of 1811.
Today, this mineral space sees the arrival of an ephemeral garden on sunny days that brightens up the district, to the delight of onlookers who come here to bask on the wooden benches.
