98 million copies of the WWE series have been sold worldwide, according to a new report by License Global, more than three million copies have been sold since the middle of last year alone, and it is currently the best-selling fighting video game franchise in the history of consoles.
The history of WWE games goes back a long way, so the report includes a number of titles that were not made under the 2K banner at all. Before it was taken over, THQ was responsible for it and created classics like 2000’s WWF No Mercy for the Nintendo 64.
The games of that time sold huge copies in their time, for example WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 sold 6 million that year. In 2012, 2K entered as a publisher and there were quite big ups and downs: WWE 2K14 was popular, while many of us remember the disaster of 2K20.
The new title proved to be a big step forward in terms of gameplay and visuals, topping the UK retail charts in March, and you can read the Game Channel review here.
