A bit of history
Before delving into what is the focus of the day, as always a bit of history.
The history of the capital’s airports begins in 1916, the year in which the “Giovan Battista Pastine” of Ciampinoon the Via Appia, an air terminal intended for airships and military use until 1947.

The numerous infrastructure development and modernization interventions in the two airports have allowed ADR over the years to respond effectively to the increase in traffic volumes.
In 2019 ADR registered, as an airport system, 49.4 million passengers with over 240 destinations in the world reachable from Rome, thanks to the approximately 100 airlines operating in the two airports. In 2022, following the effects induced by Covid – 19 on air transport, Fiumicino airport recorded approximately 29.4 million passengers while Ciampino airport closed the year with 3.5 million passengers.
“Leonardo da Vinci” is the reference “Hub” airport for international and intercontinental scheduled and charter traffic. The “Giovan Battista Pastine” of Rome-Ciampino, however, is the city airport dedicated to low-cost traffic, “express courier” freight traffic and General Aviation traffic (state, humanitarian and civil protection flights).
Officially named Rome-Fiumicino International Airport ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ it is the first Italian airport and one of the busiest airports in Europe by passenger traffic with over 43.5 million of passengers served.
It is located in Fiumicino, a city 35 km southwest of the center of Rome. L’Rome-Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” airport it takes its name from Leonardo da Vinci, who designed the first helicopter prototype in 1480.

Dal 2005the airport operates a Category III B Instrument Landing System (ILS). Further improvement works were implemented in 2007 to enable the airport to handle 30 take-offs/landings per hour, up from 10, in fog sharp pain;
In 2009 the cogeneration plant that would allow the airport to produce its own energy has been completed;
In 2010 the new single baggage sorting system came into operation for more efficient baggage delivery;
December 21, 2016 was inaugurated ‘the boarding area E‘, intended for Extra Schengen flights.
