The History and Replacement of Calibri: Microsoft’s New Default Font – Aptos

Calibri has been the default Office font since Office 2007 and replaced Times New Roman. The font has developed a colorful history and has been widely used in many documents. She was even key evidence in a corruption investigation into the Prime Minister of Pakistan, when investigators noticed that documents handed over by the Prime Minister’s daughter were written in Calibri and were dated 2006, which was evidence that they had been forged.

Calibri rivaled four other fonts in its time: Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite. These ended up in Office, but were not selected as default. Here are all the fonts:

Aptos, which will replace Calibri, is a sans serif font inspired by mid-20th-century Swiss typography, according to Microsoft. The company states that been looking for a new font for several years. Aptos was chosen as the default after years of gathering feedback and analyzing whether it would actually be a good choice.

Si Daniels, Principal Program Manager at Microsoft, explain on the blog: “Today we begin the last phase of this important change in which Aptos will start appearing as the new default font in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel for hundreds of millions of users.”

Over the next few months, Aptos will become the default solution for all Microsoft customers.

Steve Matteson is the designer who created Aptos, and previously the popular Segoe, which was licensed by Microsoft as the default Windows font.

Microsoft first started using the Segoe UI font subfamily in Windows Vista, and it continues to be used in Windows 11.

Matteson also worked on the development of the original Windows TrueType core fonts.

While Aptos will replace Calibri by default, Calibri will still be pre-pinned to the top of the new font menu (initially only available in online apps) alongside its predecessors, Times New Roman and Arial.

“Apt is part of a broader wave of features that are part of Microsoft 365. We strive to make the software more expressive and inclusive,” explains Daniels. “We’re introducing a newly designed font selector, as well as new themes, colors, and backgrounds.”
