The History and Importance of the Rabies Vaccine: A Breakthrough in Human Health

Mr. Principal:

On July 6, 1885, French scientists Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux administered the rabies vaccine to a human for the first time. After several tests against diseases caused by animals, such as avian cholera, they applied the treatment to Joseph Meister, a boy who had been exposed to the rabies virus after being bitten by a dog. It was a complete success and they managed to save his life. Since then, the rabies vaccine has been given to people who are at high risk of rabies to protect them if they are exposed. It can also prevent disease if it is given to a person after they have been exposed. The rabies vaccine is made from the inactivated rabies virus.
