The History and Diversity of Garden Vegetables: Test Your Gardening Knowledge

Are you an experienced gardener or a beginner?

Every summer, thousands of people go out of town to spend time in the country. Someone prefers to swim in the river and wallow in a hammock with a book or a smartphone, but don’t feed someone with bread – let them tinker in the garden. With the end of the season, the harvest of vegetables and fruits pleases the eye and taste, but few people realize how long certain crops have taken root in our country. It seems that many of them have always existed and are primordial, but in fact they come from distant lands. For example, carrots, which mankind has been cultivating for four thousand years, come from India, Afghanistan and the Mediterranean countries. The familiar orange color appeared much later through the efforts of Dutch breeders. In general, in nature, there are carrots of a wide variety of colors – from white to purple. In the sixteenth century, this root vegetable was considered a delicacy that only aristocrats could feast on. But already a century later, the cultivation of carrots became widespread, it began to be eaten by all segments of the population. Moreover, not only the fruit itself is edible, but also green tops.
