The History and Controversy of Clapping for Pilots

Passengers applaud the pilots after the plane lands. It is believed to be a sign of gratitude for a good flight and a sign of respect for the pilot profession.

However, the experts at TravelRambler believe that actually clapping for the pilot after landing is not recommended.

Who invented clapping for pilots

For the first time, pilots began to receive applause in the United States. The first officially documented case dates back to 1948. An American Airlines plane landed in Ohio after its landing gear failed. The pilots were able to land the plane without casualties or serious injuries.

It is believed to be the first time passengers cheered a pilot. However, it is not known for certain whether this flight was the originator of the famous tradition.

The reason for clapping may depend on the airline and country of arrival. In Kazakhstan they clap to thank the pilot, passengers of the Israeli airline El Al clap to return home when they arrive in Ben Gurion.

American low-cost airline JetBlue displayed an ad with waving passengers on screens landing at an airport in Costa Rica to mark the launch of flights to the destination.

And yet, why shouldn’t the pilots be applauded?
