“The History and Construction of the National Memorial Cemetery in Kiev, Modeled after Arlington Military Cemetery in the USA”

Construction of the National Memorial Cemetery is expected to begin at Kiev in the spring of 2023. He will take as an example the Arlington military cemetery, one of the largest and best known in the United States. On 300 hectares are more than 400,000 graves. By their straight and white lines, they unfold on the green heights of Virginia. Like the soldiers who, for centuries, formed in rows on the order of “Attention!”.

The history of Arlington War Cemetery begins in the second half of the 19th^e century, in the midst of the Civil War. In May 1864, in the district of Spotsylvania, in the state of Virginia, bloody battles took place between the armies of the North and the South. The losses of the federal forces exceeded 3,000 men.

A general problem then arises: where to bury such a large number of people. Existing military cemeteries in Washington and Alexandria are overcrowded. The government decides to use land in Arlington to create a new cemetery. Ironically, this plot previously belonged to General Robert E. Lee, Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate forces.

On the lands of a southern general

After the end of the Civil War, General Lee, through the United States Supreme Court, can get his land back, but he is not allowed to farm it as before – where once the park of his property stretched now stand the graves of the Civil War dead. Irreconcilable enemies are buried there, soldiers from both sides – the Unionists and the Confederates.
