The Historical Bombing of Sofia: A Reminder to Remember

FACTS posts opinions with a wide range of viewpoints to encourage constructive debate.

Today it is fashionable to hate Russia and the USARussia is to blame for everything, Putin is enemy #1, we push monuments, we deny history… But history remains. Whatever we do today, we are making history. It used to be a story that a Monument to the Soviet Army was erected in Sofia. Today it is history that this monument “will be restored”. It used to be history that we were subject to the Russians, and today to the “embassies”.

What will you give us, story?
from your yellowed pages? –
We were unknown people to them
from factories and offices,

we were peasants who
they smelled like onions and sour,
and under the mustache drooping
we cursed life angrily.

(NB – this is the beginning of the poem “History” by Nikola Vaptsarov)

We write history every day, but do we remember it or do we forget it… And we must not forget it!

Because…

On January 10, 80 years ago – in 1944, the largest bombing raid on Sofia took place during the Second World War (1939-1945). This reminds BTA. Bulgaria joined the war on March 1, 1941 on the side of Germany, joining the Tripartite Pact (a treaty signed on September 27, 1940 in Berlin (Germany) by Germany, Italy and Japan). In August 1943, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Theodore Roosevelt launched Operation Tidal Wave, the aim of which was to neutralize Germany’s allies Romania and Bulgaria and force them to capitulate.

Systematic bombings begin over the territories of both countries. From November 14, 1943 to April 17, 1944, 11 air raids were launched over Sofia.

The bombardment of 10 January was the first combined, i.e. day-night, attack on the city. Against 180 bombers guarded by 100 fighters, Sofia’s anti-aircraft defense sent only 39 fighters. According to the official communiqué of the Ministry of War, the Bulgarian Air Force lost one plane, 31 allied planes were shot down. A total of 1,784 bombs were dropped on the city. 750 people died, 710 were injured, 93 state and 3211 private buildings were destroyed, including the Ivan Vazov National Theater.

Let’s remember that we’ve been through this too.
