The historic Copenhagen Stock Exchange building burns and its iconic spire collapses – Diario La Página – 2024-04-18 01:23:59

A large fire broke out this Tuesday in the building of the old Copenhagen Stock Exchange, from the 17th century, and its emblematic arrow collapsed in the flames, an AFP journalist confirmed.

The 54-meter arrow was caught in flames due to the fire in the building, commissioned by King Christian IV and built between 1619 and 1640.

It is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen, and renovation work was being carried out there. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The building, located near the Parliament of Denmark, housed the Copenhagen Stock Exchange until the 1970s and currently serves as the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

The police indicated on the social network “We are facing a terrible spectacle,” reacted the Chamber of Commerce.

At the moment, there is no evidence that the fire caused any injuries. Dozens of police officers have traveled to the area, located in the center of the Danish capital, and a massive deployment of firefighters has been organized.

The areas surrounding the historic building, which contains a large number of valuable works of art, have been cordoned off. Pedestrians have been asked not to approach the area affected by the fire.

«Terrible images of the Stock Market this morning. 400 years of Danish cultural heritage in flames,” wrote Denmark’s Minister of Culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, on his official account on X.

The minister applauded the emergency services and citizens who “collaborate to save artistic treasures and iconic images from the burning building.”

Currently, parts of the roof have already collapsed and approximately half of the building is on fire. Shortly after 10:00 (local time), the fire was still not under control.

The emergency manager of the Danish capital, Jakob Vedsted Andersen, reported that it is expected that “the next 24 hours” will be needed to put out the fire.

The iconic building, whose construction was completed in 1640, is located near Christianborg Palace, the seat of Parliament, and is one of the country’s main tourist attractions. The causes of the fire are yet to be determined.
