The Highly Anticipated Film ‘Barbie’ Hits Theaters Around the World

The movie Barbie hit theaters around the world this Wednesday with its full range of pink tones, toothpaste smiles and the ultra-shaven bodies of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film’s stars.

“Barbie chronicles the blonde doll’s departure from Barbieland, heading into the real world, closely followed by her eternal boyfriend, Ken.

The marketing campaign has been intense in the world and Costa Rica has not been the exception. For days now, the comments on social networks here have revealed the enormous expectation for this film from Warner Studios.

The distribution company of the tape in our country summoned a series of television figures and influencers to the premiere in Lincoln Plaza, in Moravia. There was also another one at Nova Cinemas.

Presenters Cristiana Nassar, Melissa Durán, Marilín Gamboa and Natalia Rodríguez attended the meeting in the northeast of San José. Also the announcer Julio Solís and the influencers Kiki Peraza and Jessi Rodríguez as well as the makeup artist Ángel Rafael, among others.

There was also the boxer Yokasta Valle, who did not miss the opportunity to be photographed in the Barbie box.

All of them posed inside a huge box that simulated the packaging in which Barbies are sold around the world. Some of the guests did it in the box alluding to what Karol G said.

And it is that the Colombian interprets one of the themes of the soundtrack of this film, which was produced in conjunction with Mattel, the manufacturer of the famous plastic doll.

generations of girls

Created in 1959, Barbie has accompanied generations of girls around the world, thanks also to a skilful diversification campaign by its manufacturer, Mattel.

In the late 1960s, the toymaker began selling Barbies of different ethnicities. Currently, it ensures that it has more than 175 different models, including disabled dolls.

The film is directed by Greta Gerwig, from independent cinema and the author of other films with a clear feminist accent: France Ha or the story of a rebellious young woman, Lady Bird (2017), which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Gerwig adapted another classic in 2020, the novel little women de Louisa May Alcott.

But in Barbie opt for a spectacularly kitsch scenery, with all the clichés associated with Barbieland: the bright pink house, the Californian beach, the convertible cars…

The cast of the film is completed with Helen Mirren, Emma McKay (who plays a Barbie Nobel Prize in Physics) or Dua Lipa (mermaid Barbie).

Dua Lipa also performs the song Dance The Night, excuse for a crazy choreography.

Barbie “is culturally ahead of the curve in some things, and behind in others,” Greta Gerwig explained at the premiere. “She has been feeding all the debates for 64 years,” she added.

Trademarks on the big screen

The film is also a demonstration of Hollywood’s inexhaustible ability to find sources of inspiration or income, in this case commercial brands.

It was released last month Airabout the legendary shoe of the Nike brand, and will soon hit the screens Ferrari, en Michael Mann.

A couple of years ago, Ridley Scott filmed “The Gucci House”, with a profusion of models and objects from the Italian luxury brand on the screen.

Hollywood is good at selling progressive messages under a banal guise, or vice versa, say critics.

“The film’s marketing machine does not promote its feminist credentials. The trailers focus on fashion, fun and humor”, explains the Hollywood in Toto website.

Barbie is an “ambivalent” symbol. She symbolizes at the same time the beauty of the woman, her independence and her alienation because of her physique”, explains Christine Castelain Meunier, a French sociologist.

The film opens in the middle of a strike by actors in Hollywood, which has caused the cancellation of filming and promotional campaigns.
