Brest surprise team as a touchstone
In the first home game of the new season in the UEFA Champions League, Stade Brest, third-placed team from last year’s Ligue 1 season, is waiting for FC Salzburg. The team from Brittany was the big sensation in France in 2023/24. When coach Éric Roy took over the reins in January 2023, the club was in a relegation zone. The now 56-year-old not only led his team to secure relegation, but also bought their ticket to the UEFA Champions League a season later. He was last on the sidelines as a coach in November 2011 and is now working as a TV expert.
Austrian champions Sturm Graz found out what Eric Roy’s team can do in the 1-2 defeat on the first matchday of the premier class. Brest is of course more vulnerable away than at home. There have been three away defeats in the current Ligue 1 season so far: 0-2 in Lens, 1-3 against Paris Saint-Germain and at the weekend there was a 0-3 defeat in Auxerre.

New era in the premier class
36 clubs are represented in the premier class this season. The group phase is a thing of the past, instead the game is played in a league system. The number of matches is also new. Instead of the previous 6 games in the group phase, each club will play 8 games (4 home and 4 away games) in the regular season, which lasts from September to January. The best eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16. The teams in places nine to 16 will play in the play-off against the teams in places 17 to 24 for the further eight round of 16 tickets.
