“The High Burden of Chronic Pain: A Comparison to Leading Chronic Diseases in the US”

“Chronic Pain” My God?! American NIH study: The proportion of new chronic pain cases per year is higher than that of hypertension, depression and diabetes

Chronic pain is a common problem, affecting approximately 40 million American adults, but its impact on people’s daily lives has been difficult to define. 4.8% of U.S. adults (10.6 million) have high-impact chronic pain, and another 13.6% (29.9 million) suffer from chronic pain

A study by the National Institutes of Health found that,The rate of new chronic pain cases is high at 52.4 per 1,000 people per year. This is the same asDiabetes (7.1 cases/1,000 per year)Depression (15.9 cases per 1,000 people per year) and high blood pressure (45.3 cases per 1,000 people per year)

The study found that the prevalence of chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain (HICP) in adults was approximately 21% and 8%, respectively. Chronic pain is pain experienced most days or every day in the past three months; HICP is pain that limits activities of life or work most days or every day in the past three months. The widespread burden of chronic pain is strongly correlated with the opioid epidemic. This study illustrates the large economic and social burden of chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain on the nation.

High Impact Chronic Pain, HICP

According to 2018 statistics, nearly 11 million American adults in the United States have HICP. HICP is pain lasting 3 months or more with at least one major activity limitation, such as not being able to go out to work, school or do household chores.Compared with patients with chronic pain who did not have these activity restrictions, these people reportedMore severe pain, more mental health problems and cognitive impairment, more difficulty taking care of yourselfand the need for more healthcare resources.

Limitation of mobility is more common in people with chronic pain than in people with other chronic diseases, such as stroke, kidney failure, cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. About 83 percent of people with severe chronic pain are unable to earn a living, and one-third have difficulty performing self-care activities such as bathing and dressing.
