Saint-Ferdinand looks like a typical small village in Quebec: a rural landscape, farms, a main street, where there are a few restaurants and a grocery store, and a police station.
Saint-Ferdinand also has its cemetery. A place too big and too crowded for a village of this size. The explanation: the victims of a serial killer lie there. One day, the police arrest a suspect, but the problems are not resolved and teenagers from the village are confronted with a discovery.
JF. Dubeau wrote science fiction and fantasy/ horror before embarking on this story. “My original idea for this story was to make a paranormal historical fiction”, explains the author, in an interview.
“I brought it back to Quebec because I didn’t know the place or the time I wanted to put my story. This is the one I had in mind and I followed my instincts. “
Knowing the Eastern Townships well, he felt more comfortable framing his story in Quebec rather than New England. “I found that there weren’t many books published in English, in the United States, that take place in Quebec and that export Quebec culture. So when the opportunity presented itself, I looked into it. “
JF. Dubeau doesn’t like horror novels that are too gore and loves movies and series in the genre. “I am a big fan of true crime, stories of serial killers, bizarre and unexpected crimes. “
To write in English
He started to write without thinking of getting published and did so in English. ” It was a challenge that I had given myself. There were stories I wanted to tell, and at the time my wife was English speaking. My friends were internationally. I wanted to write for myself, for my friends and relatives, so I went in the language that was most common between us, English. “
His first science fiction book was published after he won a competition. “Everything came tumbling down and I found myself writing in English, out of habit and experience. “
The novel, titled A God in the Shed in English, was published by Inkshares in Los Angeles and the adaptation rights were purchased for television.
“The company that posted me is a small box, but they are located in Oakland, California. They have great connections to Hollywood. “
