The Hidden Functionality of U-Shaped Toilet Seats in Public Restrooms

I don’t think any of us enjoy using public toilets. Whether in restaurants, means of transport or perhaps shopping centres. The reason is, of course, hygiene. The multitude of people who have used them before us are not attractive at all. But often there is no other way and we have to visit them.

Please use a horseshoe in public toilets

You may also have encountered the U-shaped toilet seat or, if you prefer, horseshoes, in these toilets. Maybe you didn’t stop at that unusual appearance. But some of you might be wondering if this is just a design quirk. Or if this unconventional form also has a hidden functionality. Until now, we have been used to round or oval, but mainly full boards.

Hygiene in the 1st place

The reason for the open space in the front of the seat is nothing more than hygiene. If the mass in the head of the plate is missing, it is much less likely that your private parts will encounter urine that may have remained on it from previous visitors.

Yes, this shape was designed primarily with women in mind. It is also easier for them to wipe themselves after using the toilet, if the plastic in the front part does not get in the way. Without it, their hand is much less likely to accidentally rub against the seat.

But this unusual seat also has its advantages for male users of public toilets. The open front part reduces the risk of urine splashing in this section onto the rest of the board. So if the gentlemen, as they say, “don’t hit it off”.

Manufacturers save

Seat manufacturers, in particular, immediately and happily caught on to this hygienic gadget. A missing piece of material can, with a larger number of tools produced, significantly reduce production costs downwards. And of course that counts.

The U-shaped seat can hold more

And what is the other, not inconsiderable advantage of seat cushions for owners of public toilets? Due to the absence of a front part, they are more flexible and therefore better adapted to different weights of visitors. It won’t break right away. Circular and oval boards are noticeably less flexible and break more easily under heavy and repeated loads.
